Elive 2.4.0 beta released

The Elive Team is proud to announce the release of the beta version 2.4.0
This new version includes:
  • New kernel 3.16
  • Reiser4 (stable version) officially included from the installer
  • Terminology 0.7.0
  • Included tutorial by Yann Esposito about learning to use VIM superpowers

Notes from the Developers:

Reiser4: This version of Elive includes officially Reiser4 (with all known bugs fixed!), you can enjoy of an extremely-fast system by using the LZO real-time compression mode, which makes your data to use less space in your hard disk, this is good for people that wants to save space on their hard disk, but this also makes your hard disk mechanism to require less space to travel when reading the data which means that your hard disk will become magically the double or even three times faster (and so less data to transfer in non-mechanical disks), you should notice this improving. By other side reiser4 stills in experimental stage due to the lack of people using it mainly, if you want to use or try it we suggest to use your root partition for it, so your operating system will work fast and your data will be safe on another partition, remember to always make backups of your important data, its the only way to have it safe.
Comments from Edward Shishkin: Edward, which is the actual maintainer and developer of the Reiser4 since the last years, told me that there’s a new version of Reiser4 marked as stable, so I decided to build a new kernel including this stable version with zero bugs!, if you have not tried Reiser4 before it can be a good time to try it! Also, since Elive runs on live mode it can be a good rescue system for any computer that uses Reiser4.
Summary of Reiser4: Reiser4 is a read-write file system with tight packing of records on the leaf level. This completely resolves the problem of internal fragmentation and makes transparent compression more efficient. Also reiser4 is SSD aware, and in reiser4 you can choose a transaction model, which is more suitable to you drive.

Remember:

We need your feedbacks and reports, each version can include new things not working as expected, if is the case please contact us on our live chat or report it to from the website!

Note that this development release doesn’t include yet the proprietary drivers for now (Nvidia/fglrx) but the open-source drivers should detect your hardware and configure your system without problems.

Beta versions are not so optimized as the Stable ones due to debug flags and developer profiles, you can encounter errors and incomplete things, if you want a more polished system try the Stable version instead.
