Is Steve Jobs getting sleepless nights? He should after the release of Elive Gem. Mac users get a run for their money. Vista is no competition... What I liked the most about the distro is that all the packages run out-of-box. Even the mp3s, mpegs and 3gps run on livecd and it is so light on the system! The only disappointment being that the openoffice is not available unless you get the 'bonus disk'

Great work, all you devs... congrats!

Congratulations on the making of such a great distro, and thank you for your hard work. I hope you can continue with it.

I love Elive too. Best features for me are:

- Based on Debian Stable & E
- desktop (exactly what I want)
- all multimedia works out of the box
- bundled applications are very thoughtful. For example, most people who own computers these days also own a digital stills and video camera, yet most distros don't come with the tools needed for editing home m

Just wanted to say that I love ELIVE! I just got it installed and have been toying with it for an hour or so, and I have 0 complaints so far. My only issue is getting wireless working, and thats only because Broadcomm sucks for not making a linux driver like every other wireless chipset maker. Anyway, I will try to post here as much as possible with issues, fixes, and ideas as they crop up. With the community's help this could be the greatest OS Distro EVER!

THANKS ELIVE TEAM!

Elive is definitely the best looking distributions available. It uses the Enlightenment desktop environment. I have never used Enlightenment before. The ELIVE default desktop is absolutely gorgeous! The stars in the sky twinkle and move throughout the very nice looking background. The application dock at the bottom of the screen is cute, in fact better than Mac OSX. I am soon gonna switch over to Elive. I love it.

Keep up the good work Thanatermesis. You have done a fantastic job by producin

I have been impressed with Elive and e17 for quite a while...

Yesterday I did two things:

1. I re-installed Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005

2. I installed a dual boot to Elive Gem 1.0

Both installs went without event, I was most impressed with how Elive set up a custom grub menu, with the 3 options:

1. Elive Gem 1.0

2. Windows XP Media Center Edition

3. Memory Diagnostic test

I was also impress

Elive License

-

This license was updated and entirely rewriten

Introduction:

Elive is an operating system that includes a lot of misc software. Almost all of this software is free software, but every software has its own license like GPL or BSD (most of them are GPL). Elive must follow the permissions and rules of every license for each misc software.
This sentence may be confusing though the following example should explain it more clearly:

  • Open Source software means that you can modify and adapt the software to your needs, not all of the software in Elive is Open Source. For example, if you have Flash, free to download and use though you can not modify it because Adobe does not use an open-source based license. This same problem occurs with non-free drivers, Java, Skype, or other similar applications...

As I have said, you should follow the specific license for every software that you want to do anything with. For example Apache or Enlightenment 17 uses the BSD license, that is not the same as the GPL license.

Summarized:

Basically, in Elive you can:
  • Change, modify and adapt the software to your needs.
  • Sell or use Elive for commercial purposes.
  • Use Elive for any personal or profesional work (design, music creation, publishing, etc...).
  • Give or sell copies of Elive to friends or anybody.
  • Install Elive in your mom's computer.
  • You can install and/or use Elive at work, in your enterprise, in your home...
  • You can't: make your computer fly out the window (but over windows)
  • It is forbidden to use Elive for any aggression, war or crimes against humanity and/or genocide. For more details about this clause: http://www.legalventure.com/clausulamariposa/ (spanish version). Im totally against anything related with the war so I do not want any collaboration in any sense with it.
