Save the Internet

Do you know that the US government is trying to approve a law that blocks, censor, and blacklist internet ?

This is something that many people knew that would happen sooner or later, why ? because internet is the most important communication tool that the humanity has had all over the history, communication is evolution, is a purely free share of knowledge, and the governments don't want people with knowledge, they need non-thinking people like in ancient times of the humanity. But this is going to change they like it or not, , we are evoluting, and even capitalism needs smart people now, and this is a non-stop process that will continue happening naturally, but only if we have free internet.

Internet created the "open source software" and all its entire development is thanks to free communication between people. Capitalism doesn't like open source very much, and it will be very easy to erradicate it from the world by blocking those related things on internet. If you think that you are smart enough to use Proxy's and things like that, you should know that in those laws they declare it ilegal, so you will go to the jail by using a proxy. There are lots of details about this on internet.

It is not a matter of what is correct and what not, it's a matter of being free in a world manipulated by the monetary interests, we want to stay free, we are evoluting, we want to continue doing that. You should know that internet is one of the most important things that the humanity has got since centuries, so if you think that you need to exige your freedom, this is the moment.

Please sign yourself in http://www.avaaz.org/en/save_the_internet/?copy and other places, share this article with everybody, I have do it in the Elive website, you can do it with your contacts, in your social networks, everywhere... because NOW is the moment, because those laws are going to be decided these days. We need to act NOW.

Elive Website

Would You Like a New Elive Website ?

We are considering migrating the current Elive website to a Wordpress based one!

Why? Well, I personally like a lot MODx, and even if I recommend it to everybody, there are several reasons for this change: A lot of people think that there isn’t much activity on the Elive project, mainly because the website is never updated. The website is based on MODx, which is amazing, but is better when there is an active administrator or somebody featuring it, it's like a mix between cms and framework where you can build a really very good website, it has a very good made and structured code and you will end in a excelent result, reliable and stable for long time, the only bad points of it is that is not very used by the community, this means that has not very much plugins, in other words, you can't use the multitude of plugins made by the community making the website more dynamic. Wordpress has a multitude of plugins. For example, I have found a very nice plugin that translates the website into multiple languages using Google Translator and it also gives the users the ability to correct the translation, which is pretty nice!

A more dynamic website means more news. It will be easier to post and manage content, as well as add polls. There are top-quality templates that will improve the look of the Elive website. More specifically, the new website will feature:

A pretty nicer look, more professional and dynamic for our contents

Translations to any language (we will need your collaboration to have it correctly translated in yours :))

More easy to add contents, this means, more howtos, tips, and instructions

Nicer screenshots!

More features, like polls, RSS, bookmark / share

To migrate our website, we will need first to import our current plugins to the wordpress API and find some possible workarounds with the CSS. Stay tunned to the Elive News to see the first versions of the new website! We will discuss about it, about suggestions, and about errors, and all related to the new website on this forum thread.

So you might see a completely new Elive Website in the future. Don't think that it was hacked! it was just moved :)

Website Hacked

The other day, the company "Microsoft Inoperative Systems" reported to Google that Elive was malware, installing a different and operative system in the PC computers that is not in their monopolized list, switching the humans to use a serious and useful operating system, the result was that when you tried to enter the Elive website you got instead security warning by Google, saying you to leave inmediately the website because it contained malware and was very dangerous for your Windows computer, so we discussed with google explaining them that we are not collaborators of a broken capitalist system that works by interests and scams, the issue is now resolved and the Elive website is up again.

Now, seriously: The website of Elive had been hacked by a website security issue and the cracker had implemented some malware on it, the google bots found them and marked the Elive website as dangerous; thanks to a friend who sent me an email I was informed about the problem and now it has been fixed. I have found a new file added in the website and two files modified with extra code, this should not happen again because now I've written a scanner tool that searches for possible hacked files every 4 hours and notifies me inmediately if this happens. Unfortunately we are still living on a monetary-capitalist system and these things will continue to happen until we switch to <href="http://www.thevenusproject.com" target="_blank>an open-source system with a different economy not based in money (just as we have switched to an open-source computational world). Till then, these things will continue to happen because the intentions of malware are just the result of the feeded needs and interests of how our actual system works.

By other side, I want to remember that the previous issue may should only affect to the "windows" users when they try to enter in any website that contains malware, these issues shouldn't happen on macosx or linux users. I also want to say that is not possible to infect the Elive operating system, only the website has been compromised, no third party could do anything on Elive, it has a lot of security checkers for that, for example, when you download the .ISO file wich you need to boot and install Elive on your computer you have also a .md5 and a .sig file, the first one is for checking the full integrity of the system (.iso), which means that, if any of the millions of bytes are modified, then the .md5 file doesn't match and says that there's an error (normally this is useful when you have downloaded the file wrongly, for example if the download has stopped before it finishes and you thought that was complete). The other .sig file is useful for checking the authenticity of the system (.iso), it is signed with Thanatermesis's digital signature, a signature supported and certified by a lot of debian developers that proofs its authenticity again, only Thanatermesis can sign with this signature, by checking the signature you are certified that only Thanatermesis has created (or signed the authenticity) of such files. Finally, when you are installing Elive and the installer says "Verifying the integrity of the system" also checks that every byte are correct and not modified or broken by a wrong download for example.

Have a nice day.

Repository of Elive Topaz Stable changes

As you may have noticed, there was a problem with the Repository of Elive

Apparently the main mirror of the repositories suffered a DOS attack, we waited a few days to see if it would be fixed by the host, but finally we made the decision to buy an extra server for Elive to host ISOs and Repositories.

Unfortunately, our hosting provider says that the migration of the DNS's will take more than one week, so we decided to write a small fixer for you, you only have to run it and your repositories will be fixed instantly.

First of all download this file, then open your Downloads directory with your file-manager (thunar) and right-click on it in 'Properties' -> 'Permissions' and check the last option to allow to run it, close your file-manager and open it again to the same place, apparently this is needed for re-read correctly its permissions, and double-click on the file. Now your repositories will be fixed!

We are also planning to upload a new ISO of Elive Topaz with updates, minor fixes, and the new repositories configuration. Note: You don't need to to download the new Elive Topaz ISO again to get these changes, just upgrade your system in your package manager and download this fix for the repositories. We need to ensure the quality of the new ISO so, if you'd like to help us testing it, just join the IRC chat of Elive and ask :). Thank you!

Zeitgeist 3 Released

Documentary Zeitgeist 3 was released!

The Documentary Zeitgeist 3 "Moving Forward" is finally released!

Zeitgeist I: Zeitgeist, the first documentary was an University Tesis made by Peter Joseph, it was a "boom" all over internet and was the most viewed video in youtube, talks about the broken and corrupted world basically, a very hard video showing the real and inhuman things that happen in the world, those problems that not everybody is able to see. At that moment it was created a new social movement called the Zeitgeist Movement and Peter Joseph started to receive lots of emails telling him "Yes, we know that the world is f4ck3d up, but what can we do?!", Peter just replied "I don't know!", but then Roxanne Mellows sent Peter the book... "The best that money can't buy", after Peter reading, realized that the Venus Project was the solution, and it was then that Peter discovered the Venus Project... (continue reading to know what the Venus Project is).

Zeitgeist II: Since that moment, Peter decided to use the Zeitgeist Movement as a tool to make the world know about the Venus Project, and this is what the second documentary of Zeitgeist talks about, first shows how the monetary system is corrupted and then introduces the Venus Project

Zeitgeist III: This was a very awaited documentary called "Zeitgeist Moving Forward", thousands of people where waiting to see this documentary and now was finally released, it is a more serious and specific documentary where Peter has invested 200 thousand dollars to make it, important teachers of Stanford and Harvard Universities talk about the malfunction of the autodestructive economic system, it shows how we need a transition and how it should be done. It is a very inspiring and interesting documentary that everybody should see. Before criticise it, just watch it and then make up your mind. If you agree with these ideas, please share it, it was been viewed by a million persons in only 3 days, so share it with your friends and send emails to the Television Channels requesting to include this documentary in their shows, actually Italy has agreed to play it on their television, please request it in your country, we want to make all the world know about the solution of this autodestructive and decaying system, because we want to solve the problems of the world and have a lot better quality of life before is too late. Remember that we have been spoiling our natural resources.

The Venus Project: Jacque Fresco, who is now 94 years old, inventor and social designer engineer, worried about the lot of bugs of this system, and has passed all his life designing a correct made system, that proposes a very different system where the base of the problems like money and governments are replaced by something non-destructive and auto-evolutive, a real solution for evolution of this world, we recommend you to watch the very beautiful documentary called "Future by Design", unfortunately the venus project has not been well known for decades but now thanks to the Zeitgeist Movement it is everyday more known, and this is the first step of this human evolution. You can watch a lot of small pieces of videos in youtube by searching for Jacque Fresco.

This shows all of the world problems, and we hope to solve those problems before it is too late. That's my own apportation, now it's your turn.

Note: You can watch Zeitgeist III in your language subtitled by clicking in the button [CC] and selecting your language. You can also watch the other documentary's in your language with a little of search in google or youtube.

Gift for users

Today we have a really nice news for all the Elive Users

Today, me and Anabell, the new organizer and marketing director of Elive, had a very good idea for Elive, as you know, Elive is an unique operating system in all the world because doesn't follow any rule stablished by the system, Elive has personality and the power to be free as how it wants to be, and now, we are going to include an incredible feature never seen before in any other operating system, but more than a feature is an amazing gift...

Unfortunately I can't say anything about what is this feature, because we want it to be a big big surprise!, we want to listen echo's of OMG in all around the world!, the only thing that I can say about it is that is not very much related with software or applications but is something like an unvaluable gift, even with a good bunch of thousands of money you can't have a better gift, I think that this part is a little fun because sometimes there's a strange user lost around there saying that 15 bucks is a lot of money (even if we have non-paying options), now we are offering something comparable to thousands of bucks!, but anyways... I don't worry about these ones, because as you know, Elive is made for whom appreciates it, nobody obliges you to use Elive, you are free, so remain free.

Have a nice day !

Instructions

I have recently noticed that the users with poor knowledge's of gnu/linux (in other words, that never has tried it), doesn't know How to boot Elive in their computers, so this is why i have added a new entry in the Howto's section with the instructions about how to boot your computer with Elive. It is meant to perfectly explained everything so that anybody be able to run Elive on his computer, you are welcome to suggest anything to add anything on it by simply sending me an email.

The idea still the same, that any kind of user be able to use Elive, without previous knowledge about gnu/linux or other things, if you know other things that needs to be more easy for a new end-user, you can suggest me it by for example reporting it as feature request in the BTS (bugs) website.

I profite also this entry to say that the development of Elive continues, of course, I say that because there's a lot of people in the IRC channel that doesn't see me anymore on it, the reason is simple: IRC takes a lot of time and i prefer to use this time for develop Elive, IRC makes me to lost a lot of time, so I don't expect to return really much on the IRC for now :). If you don't see any update recently is just because im rewriting ALL my personal tools, ways of work, automations, more stable and controled processes... everything, even my new Home structure system that is basically finished. I will try to finish these things as soon as possible and do an update of the actual Topaz version with minor fixes, and starting to work in the new kernel and updating all the packages, I can't say any date, just that ASAP :)

Have a nice day!

Compiz !: If you want to use the Compiz features (ecomorph) you can do it directly on the fly without the need of a special version of Elive, on the other hand, we recommend to use it only as a demo since it makes your system unstable. If you are a C coder and have some knowledge of the X libs, you are welcome to help this project and fix the minor bugs.

3G Phones supported with 364 providers available for any country

Look: Some things of the look are now even better than before

Elpanel: Removed and moved everything to a more standard and unique place for the configurations

Bluetooth supported

Trayer included

Shared Folders also know as samba it is directly suported in Elive in a very easy to use way, thanks to LinuxNIT for these nice applications, along with others!

Audio Configurator: If you have more than one audio card, you can select the right one at any moment! This feature is very useful for me when I'm working on the night and I need to switch to the card that is set to my headphones. You can also play with Elive multiple audio sources without problems.

Special Kernels: You can install on your installed Elive system special kernels that, for example, include support for more than 4 GB of ram without the need of a 64 bit-OS, (in the nurse special mode)

Translations: Elive now supports more languages, by default they are automatically translated but you are welcome to collaborate with these translations by using Eltrans.

User-Friendly: Never has an operating system that was this easy and userfriendly to use as Elive 2.0 The list is huge and the goal is that even senior people can use Elive 2.0 without problems. Some examples are:

Recover Configurations: You can recover any "Elive default" configurations, like your desktop settings

Hardware Tests to verify that your computer is working without problems

Packages: check if your system contains all the packages included by default with Elive, if not, you may miss some feature

Free Space on the disk

Kernel: Install newer kernels or also with special support like more than 4gb of ram

Installer: The installer includes a lot of features like:

Upgrade mode: Do not perform a new install, just do an upgrade of your old Elive system, so that you still maintain your users, files, and everything... remember that everybody should periodically do a system backup

Migrate: Migrate any Linux system to an Elive system, this includes to saving users, files, passwords, and some configurations

Filesystems: Special filesystems such as EXT4 and Reiser4 are now supported directly by the installer. Reiser4 includes compression support that will boost your machine twice as fast compared to EXT3

Reinstall: You don't need to burn CD's anymore. As of this version, if you want to reinstall Elive again you have a feature in your menue that does it without the need of CD's
