Elive 1.7 development released

Thanatermesis proudly presents the Elive 1.7 development release!

After many silent weeks and relentless testing by our tireless users of
the 1.6 and 1.6.2 development releases, we have now reached 1.7!
So testers, line up at the iso check-out line and get to it! Thank you
for all your hard work in helping me make Elive a better distro with
    every release!

OK, let's get down to the new stuff...

But first, the bad stuff... There is no installer! There are so many changes
in the overall system that the installer has to be totally rewritten. I will
get on that a.s.a.p, it will be the big thing to test in Elive-1.8. But I
NEED your 1.7 test results and impressions in order to make a better OS!,
remember that we have a very good website at http://bugs.elivecd.org to
    report problems or request features

Read the full changelog because this is a full-featured version of Elive with
some long awaited features working out-of-the-box:

E17 menus [first try] ready! Some users have (while others have not),
noted that the menus of E17 are ugly and incomplete, the feature of
correct menus is now implemented on Elive

Suspend / Hibernation: This is a feature that a lot of users
have wanted on Elive for a long time. Now it is implemented by default,
working simply out of the box if your computer supports these features.
Enjoy it directly on your E17 menu or by closing the LID of your laptop!

Icons: There's a bit of a workaround in the icon theme.
Not finished yet, but looking a lot better :)

Languages: In the boot options of the Live mode, the language
selector menu is enabled by default again

Translations: As you may know, there's a new tool to make
translations in Elive called eltrans, we invite you to try it
because it is very easy to use and fully graphical. Italian, Dutch and German
users can see the boot messages of the live mode now on his language directly,
thanks to: assasukasse, AlexAnteMachina, and awolters. More translators are
      	wanted and welcome!

Eject CD: fixed in the live mode, shutdown

Autolaunchers: have been reimplemented

Printer: issues fixed on elpanel

Elpanel: also got a few updates

Switched to ESU!: EFL version of Gksu, thanks to PrinceAMD

Like always, There are more changes, but too minor or internal
          to mention here.

Elive 1.6 development released

The Elive Team is proud to announce the release of development
    version 1.6

Thanatermesis releases Elive 1.6 dev with some interesting new features!

New improved boot system of live mode (not finished)

Icedove 2.0

Much better disks and partitions self recognition (filesystems, etc)

Your CD's can eject now without being umounted first

Eltrans, the new translation tool for elive (eltrans is a powerful tool for any user that wishes to help with the translation process of Elive in his/her native language, it doesn't require any computer skills, it is almost fully automated, even the n00best user can translate freely with it). Note: If you want to use eltrans, update it to the version 1.2

Resolutions selector re-enabled temporally

EeePC modules for his acpi support (any EeePC tester?)

Misc improved Windows support functions

New usernames for the IRC, now contains the language keycode, like Elive_user5_pt (for portuguese)

The Wifi (Wireless) widget called exalt is working again (thanks watchwolf!)

The special version of Elive for MacBooks are going to be implemented on the normal Elive versions, so, this is the first compatible ISO

New prompt!: Elive now uses a new prompt (the default line that appears in your terminals). Very similar to the old one but with more features. Let me explain these new features (please continue reading if you are a medium/advanced user): The new prompt now contains only the username and the actual directory address, but if you ssh into a remote machine (which needs to use elive or the same prompt), automatically the "@hostname" (where 'hostname' is the name of the remote machine) is added in your prompt; moreover, it does a fast calculation and assigns a different color for every hostname where you login. This way you know directly 'where' is this shell going just by looking at the terminal and you won't make ugly mistakes thinking that you are in your local computer for example.
This prompt is made in the best way for copy-pasting an address from one terminal to other in order to send or copy files. There are other features disabled by default like a direct-color assigned to your favorite hostnames, or to have an audio signal played when a login is made in your computer (very useful if you want to know WHEN somebody (or something) has logged into your computer). These features are very useful for system admins, geeks, and a good measure of normal users; for all the rest, its just a beautiful prompt :)

Note that this is a DEVELOPMENT version, and because the changes
this serie has undergo it is not ready for a end-use installation on a production machine.
Download the ISO in the development section

Elive 1.5.0 development released

The Elive Team is proud to announce the new development version 1.5 with big and important changes:

        Big changes on Elive

Warning: This is a very experimental Elive iso. The boot system is entirely rewritten, working but not finished. A lot of auto-detection/configuration parts are not implemented yet. This version is not ready to be installed, this is a release for testers and collaborators who want to discuss it at the Elive Testers Group

Debian Testing: Ever wanted more updated packages on Elive? ok, we switch to "Lenny" that has A LOT of packages (all?) are updated! We can't describe them all here, if you want more information about this switch, have a look at the actual ideas on this temporary page

Elive installer: When you select a partition to install Elive on, and it already has a version of Linux on it (ANY version, and you want to replace it), and it uses a separate /home partition, there's an option to 'migrate' this system. This means that basic configurations and all the users with the files are transferred to your new Elive installation. Note: This feature is working but not fully implemented, we need testers, especially with ubuntu systems.

More special hotkeys for special laptops working by default (we need testers!).

Firefox: Nice feature that show thumbnails of the sites in your search results of google!

A more integrated system of translations in Elive. Anybody is VERY welcome to be a translator, you just need to send a email to with a username and a password to use, Thank you for helping us with Elive and have it translated into your native language! :)

Note that this is a DEVELOPMENT version, and especially that
it is not ready for daily use. Download the ISO
    from the development section

Happy 2008!, we wish you a great and fruitful coming year!
There are many news coming with the new year for Elive.
Also if you see very little movement on this website, that's because Thanatermesis is working hard on the development of Elive for the next versions, he has many ambitious plans:

Elive will be separated into 3 versions now, two will be based on Debian Testing in order to have many updated applications and happy users!

A new e17 (actually semi-implemented), and better integration and more userfriendly. More stuff working out of the box

A complete rewrite of the wifi support

A complete rewrite of the livecd-system

An updated new kernel (actually semi-implemented)

Many features that we want to implement like suspend/hibernation, and a lot more that we don't want to say because we like the element of surprise !!

Happy Birthday Elive !!!

Elive is 5 years old. We have decided to count the age of Elive from the real development instead of the releases with the name "Elive". The first system made was a livecd called Tezcatlipotix based on Knoppix 3.1 lite. A desktop livecd for personal use with Enlightenment in the same spirit as Elive. After that, the decision to make this system for the public was made. The name was changed to Elive and a project was then hosted on debianitas.net, which soon switched to it's own server and project.

We decided to tell you this to clarify the path that lead up to Elive 1.0 Gem. Thanatermesis is a careful developer determined to make a REALLY good system, not just to release security updates every month. He thinks that "doing it right" is better than "doing it fast". Here is a summary of the Elive releases:

0.1: The first test, based on Knoppix, not to be considered stable at all, but 'just working'.

0.2: Problems fixed after reports and experiences, still just a development and working version.

0.3: This version can be considered the first stable version, the base system also switched from Knoppix to Morphix.

0.4: Called Serenity, where Elive switched from Morphix to DSS.

0.4.2: A second release of Serenity, with some problems fixed like important bugs on our very beloved ATI drivers (ironic)

0.5: A milestone release, called Revolution

0.6: Next Elive release, called Revolution+ (Thanatermesis loved this name and didn't want to change it)

1.0: The luxurious Gem release! The users said the 0.6.7 release was good enough for 1.0...and... it was!

2.0: Our next stable release :) With an updated kernel, with the base system moved to Debian Testing (yes, Thanatermesis is working hard to switch to Debian testing and have our requested updated applications!). New features: updated Enlightenment 17 with shelves and all the other improvements. The system will be switched from DSS to a script set designed by Thanatermesis!

Elive Shop

Some of our users have asked us where to get the "Stayin' Elive T-shirt" seen on this video, and we decided to give the users some nice Elive apparel and we have opened a Shop at CafePress.

The Elive Team is proud to announce the release of development
    version 1.2.3

Seasons Greetings to all Elive users! The Elive Team is happy
to announce the release of a new development version:

This version of Elive includes even more stability and
usability of the livecd mode, especially when you install
applications or do a lot of stuff on it

we have also switched to a newer 2.6.23.9 kernel while we
wait the final release of 2.6.24 that Elive is going to use.

The installer includes many useful and innovative new
features that permit you to convert any Linux OS to a Elive
system. If you have another linux installation
on the partition where you want to install Elive, Elive
automates the process by saving all your users, files,
passwords, and minor system configurations. Note that this
feature at the moment only works on systems that use a
      separate /home partition.

Note that this is a DEVELOPMENT version, and specially that serie
it is not ready for a
end-use, on one hand the menus are not customized! but on the other hand remember that
the E17 is updated to day from the CVS. Download the ISO

I'm working on the new development version of Elive that includes the latest e17, that has a lot of features, a lot more user friendly, faster, lighter, compatible with .desktop files, you can also install other Window Managers and choose them on the login screen. I want to say that if it's needed I'll put a lot more work into this, the results looks pretty good so far.

About the CDs of Elive in the reviews

Like in Linux Format Magazine #92 that has included a nice version of Elive on the DVD, we want to offer more versions of Elive in any kind of Linux Review, but for that, we need a list of reviews that we can send CD proposals to.

If you'd like to see a CD of Elive in your favorite Linux review-including the latest features, send us a email to with the name of your favorite review (you can include a list of reviews too) and its contact email, don't forget to state the country the review is in, so we can know what reviews exists in other countries.

We offer 3 FREE DOWLOAD codes of Elive Gem (stable) for every contact of magazine that includes the name and the contact email that we receive, that you can download Elive freely or give it to your friends!

New CMS

We have switched to a new CMS !

It is called MODx, it looks verrrry good
and very professional too. Take a look at their youtube video
If you want to see the old website, you can view it on http://old.elivecd.org

The bad news is that there is no support for other
languages than english anymore (for now).
We have to wait for modx to implement a multi-lingual
system. We considered writing our own module but we think it's
better to wait for modx to make one, for better
  implementation/compatibility

You'll notice the new website has the same look as the old one, yet it is totally different. We are hoping
to make a more active website thanks to this new CMS!

If you read the Elive news by RSS, please
update it!, the new RSS address is now http://elivecd.org/feed.xml

If you have an article about Elive on a web-blog, homepage, or
any other website, please update your links, if you have not
written an article on any website about Elive, please do so now!
We want to have the highest possible number of users in the
world to know about Elive before the next release!

I want to say a big Thanks! to bentejuy for all his help in making this website work and for making features for it! :)

Now that I have finshed up with the website and stuff, I can continue working on the development of Elive.
And start implementing the very awaited and wanted new version of E17 on Elive by default!

This is a line:

And it actually separes the news of the old website with the news of this new very good CMS system website !

That means: All the rest of the news are not actually imported, we hope to import the old news... maybe, if I found time

You can access to the old news from the old website, more exactly in the news section
