I have recently noticed that the users with poor knowledge's of gnu/linux (in other words, that never has tried it), doesn't know How to boot Elive in their computers, so this is why i have added a new entry in the Howto's section with the instructions about how to boot your computer with Elive. It is meant to perfectly explained everything so that anybody be able to run Elive on his computer, you are welcome to suggest anything to add anything on it by simply sending me an email.

The idea still the same, that any kind of user be able to use Elive, without previous knowledge about gnu/linux or other things, if you know other things that needs to be more easy for a new end-user, you can suggest me it by for example reporting it as feature request in the BTS (bugs) website.

I profite also this entry to say that the development of Elive continues, of course, I say that because there's a lot of people in the IRC channel that doesn't see me anymore on it, the reason is simple: IRC takes a lot of time and i prefer to use this time for develop Elive, IRC makes me to lost a lot of time, so I don't expect to return really much on the IRC for now :). If you don't see any update recently is just because im rewriting ALL my personal tools, ways of work, automations, more stable and controled processes... everything, even my new Home structure system that is basically finished. I will try to finish these things as soon as possible and do an update of the actual Topaz version with minor fixes, and starting to work in the new kernel and updating all the packages, I can't say any date, just that ASAP :)

Have a nice day!

Nurse Mode Finished

The Elive Nurse mode is finished!

Like you may have read in the last Blog entry, there's a very nice feature called Nurse Mode, and now it is totally finished and implemented on the last Elive Development ISO. If you need to troubleshoot the installation for some reason, we hope you enjoy the nurse's valuable assistance!

This is the list of the current implemented features that Nurse Mode has:

Xorg: Recover the Elive Xorg configuration (graphical system configuration)

Health: Do tests of the health of your computer to know whether everything is working correctly

Clean: To free some space on the hard disk

Boot: Recover the boot files if you can't boot in normal mode

Grub: Edit the list of grub entries

Entrance: Recover the configuration of Entrance if you can't log in to the normal system

Kernel: To install a different kernel and everything else the new kernel needs

Wifi: A suite to install drivers for your Wireless card using ndiswrapper (makes the wireless card work using native windows drivers)

Passwords: Modify user(s) or admin passwords

Apps Win*: Remove Windows* installed applications (yes, because you can install them in a very easy way in Elive)

Apps Menu: Remove personal applications/icons entries from the menus

Configurations: Update some user/personal configurations and set as the default made for Elive

Configurations: Another feature to recover other old configurations, but this feature is not implemented yet as pf this writing

Keyboard: Reconfigure your keyboard mapping

Language: Reconfigure your language

DiskPlug: This will fix any external pluggable disk that was not automatically mounted when it was inserted or connected

Reports: Report bugs to Elive

WinMigrate: A small how-to about some tips for migrating from a Windows* system, such as importing things like bookmarks. If you have more tips for this you can email me :)

More: Other minor features and future ones that may be implemented for the next stable release

We hope that Nurse Mode will make life easier for any user, since not experience nor expertise required :)

New feature: Nurse mode

Are you bored and want to write something about Elive ? May be you will be interested in the Nurse mode

After years of Elive development I have found that quite often users have the same questions: How I can do foo? How I can recover bar? How I can restore something ?... These questions, even if they are possible to be resolved manually or with any tool in Elive, may not be readily known by users or it is difficult to find a solution or maybe the user is a bit lazy to click in the configurations panel. But there could be also other more important problems like the user has tried to reconfigure the graphical system and so broken it.

For that, I have decided to create a special boot mode for recovery purposes to manage all these things. With a sexy name like the nurse mode, unfortunately also with the request of some users I can't put on it a sexy nurse girl wallpaper, it will not be totally correct even if I include also a sexy nurse boy togheter, also, Elive don't like to use these crappy marketing techniques like some enterprises will do.

What will the Nurse mode include ?

It is not finished but the main idea is to include all these features:

Graphical drivers: reinstall / fixup

Xorg configuration: recover or reconfigure

Installed packages: Check if all default installed packages still being installed (things may be not work by having removed accidentally or manually some of them), with the option to reinstall them

Hardware Checks: Verification that all the hardware works correctly, specially the RAM and the Hard disk, and also the correct work of the cpu calculations at full work

Update clean configurations: The user may brake any of its configurations, he can update it from a clean default Elive conf

Recover old configurations: To recover old configurations, maybe updated ones or maybe by a new install

Boot recover: Recover boot (vmlinuz/initrd) if the user can't boot its system

Entrance: Check or clean the default entrance (login manager) configurations

Passwords changer: Modify the password of any user or admin (root)

Edit grub config: To edit the boot list configuration file

Wine: Remove wine applications (installed and from the menus)

Applications menus: Remove personal applications entry's in the menus or the bar, some may be broken

Swap checker: Check if there's any swap and if is used, if not, ask for fix it

Keyboard / Language: Configurator of keyboard or language

Automount of disks: Sometimes an entry on the fstab will not allow the user to automatically mount an external disk, this feature will remove these entry's

ETC!

So what you think ? is not that the perfect remaining feature in Elive for any new linux user that doesn't knows how to fix their problems manually or from a terminal ? :)

Python Collaboration Help Required

We have a very nice Network-Manager Application called net-connector.
This Python-application uses EFL bindings.
Unfortunately the Author can no longer spend the time required to repair the few bugs that need to be fixed in order to make this Application work correctly. If you feel encouraged you can have the source at development website, if you want to work on the SVN of net-connector just fill up a Collaborate form and contact me in order to have SVN access.

More information at ticket of net-connector

Note: Probably we will use exalt (not finished yet) in the Future again.
It would be a nice Alternative to exalt if the Users like it more.
But at the Moment we need net-connector to work correctly on Elive.

The Release of 2.0 will only have one Networkmanager.

Elive Forum Spam Attacks

Yesterday I was informed about a Spam-attack on the Forum's Website (thanks Mark Hamilton). I found nearly 100 posts of Spam. (thanks to enterprises paying spammers for spreading "news" about their software)
It took me a full day raising up the security levels of the Eliveforum, removing Posts, banning Users, banning Expressions, and adding some new Moderators.

I have just noticed that there was no RSS source visible.
We have repaired that now.
Use it in order to be updated about Forum activities.
