Downloading Elive
First of all you need to download Elive, for that, just go to the Stable page and select any mirror from the list and download your desired version of Elive, note that maybe you can found different versions, you can see on the same page which version fits better for you.
What you need to download exactly is the ISO file, you can notice too that there's a MD5 file, you need to download this one in order to verify the integrity of your ISO file, in other words, to be sure that all the bytes of your downloaded Elive are in perfect state, without modification and that the download was not interrupted. This is simply optional but it is strongly recommended to use this verification in order to avoid possible errors.
Checking the integrity of your Download
For verify the MD5 file, if you are in a gnu/linux system, you need to run the command "md5sum your_file.iso", this will show you the md5sum calculation value of your file.iso, so simply compare your obtained result with the content of the .md5 downloaded file. If you need an easier way to do it you can try to run the command md5sum -c your_file.md5 from a terminal, it should check the md5 values on the md5 file assiged to every .iso file, so, it will simply tell you if the md5 is correct or not. If you are going to burn a CD with Elive, it is also very recommended to check the md5 (integrity) of your recorded data, for that you can see a detailed example on this howto
If you are in windows you can install this tool, then go to the location of your downloaded .ISO file and select "Send To" and select "winMD5Sum", you can compare here the result with the original .md5 file.
Recording your Elive
You have 2 ways to record your Elive system, you can use a CDrom and you can use a USB stick device, it is very recommended to use the USB option because multiple reasons, but there's also a disadvantage:
- It is a lot more secure and stable, your data on a CDrom can be readed wrongly (or even recorded bad), this is a very common problem of the CD's and is very possible that if you have problems, this can be the cause.
- It works a lot more faster, to read a CD there's a lot of mechanica parts, for read a USB memory there's not mecanical parts and it boots (and installs) a lot more faster.
- You don't are limited by the 700 MB sizes of the cdrom's, this means that you can use the special for usb version of Elive that includes more packages like openoffice, in the normal (for CD) version of Elive this is not possible because it simply doesn't fit in the limitation of the 700 MB that the cdrom's has.
- Not all the computers can boot from USB (specially old ones), but in the same side not all the new computers includes a cdrom device.
Advantages
:Disadvantages
:Note that if your computer doesn't boot from a USB but you want to install Elive from a usb, you can simply continue the boot of the cdrom from the USB, this works for any machine, just remember that old computers with USB 1.0 will run it veeery slow, for more details about this trick just see this howto
If you want to use the USB option, just follow this howto for more details.
If you want to use the CDROM option, you need simply to record the ISO file as image mode in your favourite burner application, remember that is very important to burn it as image mode, if you put the iso file as a "simple file to burn" it will simply not works, because the ISO file is on reality a container of all the needed things, it includes also the special configurations to make the cdrom bootable, so again, if you don't burn it as image mode it will not work. If you are in windows you can use different options:
- isorecorder: After to install it, just right-click in your ISO file and select "copy image to CD"
- imgburn
- You have some examples here about how to burn a Image on a CD from windows
Booting your computer with Elive
Gotcha!, this is the last hard step to do for enjoy your Elive system, one time you are booting Elive, the rest becomes more easy and intuitive...
You need now to boot your computer from your bootable device that has Elive, so you need to tell your BIOS that you don't want to boot from your hard disk as normal mode, but that you want to boot from THIS device instead:
Almost all the computers has a special key when the computer turns ON for say which device you want to boot from, this key is normally the Fx key (F1, F2, F3...), unfortunately this is not a standard for all the computers, for know it you need to read FASTLY the message that comes in the bottom of your screen when you turn ON your computer, the FIRST message, the first screen, it should say something like F12 Boot Select or something like that, or "F8 Device List", it is different on any computer... you need to discover it, so, it says which key is needed to press to have the menu of devices for select which one you want to boot your computer, it can be F12, F8, F2... etc... note that most of the Asus computers is the ESC key instead of the Fx'. You need to press this key a lot of times fastly when the computers boots in order to enter on this mode.
If you really don't see this message, then you need to play with "test and try", so simply turn ON your computer and start pressing the key F12 for example, if not works, try again with F11, and next ones...
The last option is to enter in the BIOS and select the device that you want to boot from, the BIOS key is normally the supr key, but warning with this option and don't change something important for your computer :)
If you do this step succesfully you can see a screen with Elive telling you to select a language from a list, the rest since here is a lot more easy :)
